SEO, AEO and GEO: a practical search plan for Indian businesses

Clear, helpful pages are the foundation. SEO and AI-search eligibility do not guarantee rankings, citations or enquiries.

SEO, AEO and GEO describe related goals

Search engine optimisation (SEO) improves a site's eligibility and usefulness in search. Answer engine optimisation (AEO) focuses on clear answers. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) describes efforts to make content understandable and useful to AI-driven search experiences.

These are not separate guarantees or shortcuts. Start with accurate business information and a page that genuinely answers the customer's question.

Build one useful page for each distinct customer need

Use a clear page title, descriptive heading, concise introduction and a next step relevant to the service. Add practical examples, scope and limitations. Link related services and explain who the content is for.

Use relevant search language naturally. Repeating every keyword across every page can obscure meaning; Google does not use the keywords meta tag for web ranking.

  • Match the page to a real question or service, not an unrelated high-volume term.
  • Keep business name, address, phone and contact details consistent.
  • Use self-referencing canonical URLs and descriptive internal links.
  • Provide sources for factual claims and keep advice current.
  • Measure qualified enquiries alongside clicks and impressions.

Make publishing easy to discover

Public pages should render readable content without requiring sign-in. An XML sitemap lists the broader set of public URLs; an RSS feed can announce recent articles to feed readers and publishing tools, including WordPress-compatible feed readers.

Googlebot and Bingbot access supports traditional search discovery. OpenAI distinguishes OAI-SearchBot for search from GPTBot for potential training; Perplexity also documents its own crawlers. Allowing a crawler does not prove it has visited or will cite a page.

Separate organic search from paid search

SEM often refers to paid search campaigns. An advertising plan needs a target audience, relevant landing page, conversion measurement and an approved budget. Paying for ads does not buy organic placement.

Use Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools to monitor discovery and performance. Sitemap acceptance means a submission was received; URL Inspection reads Google's indexed version and is not an indexing request. RSS and llms.txt are discovery aids, not promises of inclusion.
